Problem Statement

When metadata is inaccurate, malformed, or missing, it has the capability to introduce technical streaming issues, cause content to play back when it’s not authorized, introduce inappropriate and contextually unrelated ads during breaks, and even prevent prompt payment of royalties and fees to those providing the content.

Project Description

High-quality metadata is the key to smooth OTT operations. There are various categories of metadata, each with its purpose. It’s critical to understand how each type of metadata is used and the impact of when that metadata is inaccurate, malformed, or missing. When metadata is inaccurate, malformed, or missing, it has the capability to introduce technical streaming issues, cause content to play back when it’s not authorized, introduce inappropriate and contextually unrelated ads during breaks, and even prevent prompt payment of royalties and fees to those providing the content. Providing a resource for the industry to use to familiarize itself with how metadata is utilized and what it can impact would be of high value in helping train the next generation of content operators and video engineers. It may also help shed light on where there may be gaps in existing metadata implementations, standards, or even tooling to support quality metadata at scale.

(DRAFT) SVTA1073: Metadata Primer, Common Issues, and Prevention

When metadata is inaccurate, malformed, or missing, it has the capability to introduce technical streaming issues, cause content to play back when it’s not authorized, introduce inappropriate and contextually unrelated ads during breaks, and even prevent prompt payment of royalties and fees to those providing the content.

Goals and Objectives

Expanding off SVTA1023 with a document that further breaks down the metadata categories, some of the main fields in each category, and what they’re used for. Expanding off SVTA1023 with a document detailing three to five of the industry’s top challenges with media metadata, some background on them, and how to prevent issues. Maintaining project artifacts via ongoing enhancements of the above documents to continue growing the knowledge base. Collaborating with other Metadata WG projects to allow for connecting the dots in this media metadata landscape to create a centralized and cohesive starting point to dive into other topics area projects.
