Problem Statement

Currently a person wanting to dive into Open-Caching does not have a sufficient starting point that would provide both the basic explanations of:
  • What is Open Caching?
  • What are the components and interfaces that construct the Open Caching architecture? And references to the different data sources which could provide a deep dive into each topic.
  • Reference architectures
  • Additional background information and references such as guidelines, security etc.

Project Description

Open-Caching is a content delivery architecture which specializes in having caching resources in Service-Provider (SP) networks and in exposing open and industry standard APIs. The consumers of such caching resources can be different Content-Publisher (CP), other Content-Delivery Networks (CDNs) and internally by the Service-Providers. Hereafter these consumers are referred to as upstream-CDNs or in short uCDNs. This architecture document project is intended to be the reader’s entry point to the domain of Open-Caching thus it focuses on the high level architecture and design guidelines of Open-Caching. See https://opencaching.svta.org/ for more information on Open Caching.

Goals and Objectives

Act as a reference to other Open Caching work.

Project Scope

This document will describe Open Caching in high level, it will present the broad view of the work done around open caching and will serve as a central location to list common guidelines and understandings. The document will not repeat details presented in the API specs but rather will reference them. The document will not repeat the use-cases described In the implementation guideline spec, but rather reference it when appropriate. Common domains like API security, if too broad or detailed to fit into the architecture spec would be split out to a separate spec.
