Why Did Blockcast Join the Streaming Video Technology Alliance?

Blockcast is a content multicasting service for scaling online video access in even the most remote networks. We found perfect alignment with the goals of Open Caching and tremendous value in adopting and helping shape the specification for us to maximize interoperability and adoption.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the SVTA Can Help Address?

The industry’s biggest problem is a persistent bandwidth shortage because the explosive growth in demand for higher bitrate content such as UHD-2 8K and VR outpaces network operators’ ability to scale their traffic. Although the internet was not designed to deliver video, it accounts for most traffic today. Unlike television broadcasts that are non-rivalrous, requests for the same video stream on a network must share the available bandwidth. While CDNs help eliminate duplicated traffic, as the number of network caches increases and they penetrate every access point, the bandwidth required to update them or stream live video again becomes a bottleneck. IP multicast enables efficient content delivery to many receivers simultaneously using a single physical resource, and using machine learning can save what is most relevant to users. Multicast has existed in the various transmission standards used globally for some time but has been inaccessible because of the complexity of their interfaces and regional variations. The Open Caching initiative has been a giant leap forward for the industry by providing content owners with a simple interface to the caching infrastructure of network operators. By providing a single interface to content broadcasting with Open Caching, Blockcast and other Alliance members can bridge the gap between internet video and television and enable any application developer or OTT provider to efficiently reach large audiences in the most remote networks.

How Does an Organization Like the SVTA Bring Value to the Industry?

In a rapidly evolving industry, the Alliance is invaluable in fostering collaboration amongst experts and providing the resources to test and deploy innovative solutions to the industry’s biggest challenges. The Alliance brings together broadcasters, OTT service providers, and network operators and is uniquely suited to accelerate the adoption of technologies that bring the scalability of linear television to online video. Moreover, as a non-standardization body, it is one layer removed and has a broader reach for proliferating empirical findings, best practices, and influencing standards bodies across the industry.
