Having initially joined the SVA under Viacom in 2017, Paramount continues as a dedicated member of the SVTA, driving advancements in streaming technology. By collaborating with leading technology companies, content providers, and distributors, we enhance distributed caching, improve video quality-of-service measurement, and address emerging challenges.

Over The Past 10 Years, How Has The SVTA Consistently Met The Needs of The Streaming Video Industry?

The SVTA has been a valuable resource for the streaming video industry by facilitating collaboration and sharing knowledge. Through its member meetings, the SVTA has provided a platform for industry leaders, including Paramount, to discuss new ideas and address challenges. The Alliance’s whitepapers and best practice recommendations have offered useful guidance on emerging technologies and industry standards. For Paramount, these insights have been helpful in navigating the evolving landscape of streaming technology and improving our ability to deliver a high-quality viewing experience. The SVTA’s efforts have supported the ongoing development of a more effective and cohesive streaming ecosystem.

What Do You Feel Are The Major Challenges Still To Be Tackled In The Streaming Industry And How Do You Feel The SVTA Can Help In The Years To Come?

Device fragmentation and outdated DRM tools remain significant challenges in the streaming industry. Many devices struggle with basic functionalities, complicating the delivery of high-quality content. Additionally, supporting advanced features such as 4K, HDR, high frame rates, surround sound, multilanguage audio and captions, low latency live content, and digital ad insertion adds further complexity.

The SVTA can help address these challenges by facilitating collaboration among members to develop common solutions. Through shared testing, the SVTA Labs and collective efforts, the SVTA helps to establish standards and best practices that enhance interoperability and ensure consistent, high-quality streaming experiences across diverse technologies and platforms.

What Has Been Your Most Memorable/Rewarding Experience As An SVTA Member?

One highlight was hosting an SVTA member meeting at our New York Times Square office in 2018. It was a valuable opportunity for engaging discussions and showcasing the diverse range of streaming innovations our team was working on.

Recently, we’ve been excited to see our player team leads drive the “Common Media Library” project, supported by the SVTA. This initiative aims to streamline and consolidate code across various player libraries, simplifying maintenance, bug fixes, and updates while introducing new common functionalities.

What Advice Would You Give Someone Considering Joining The SVTA?

Being a member offers the chance to collaborate on solving common challenges, share practical insights, and stay informed about the latest developments. It’s a good way to connect with others facing similar issues and contribute to finding effective solutions.
