Edge

Overview

HTTP-based adaptive streaming is currently the dominant technology used for delivering video over the internet, however a general purpose HTTP server is not necessarily the most performant option for delivery of high-concurrency low-latency linear events. There is a need for specialized edge caches optimized for these use cases. Moreover, there is a growing number of existing and emerging non-HTTP protocols addressing high-concurrency live use cases, from WebRTC and SYE to mABR and the upcoming IETF MoQ. We see the coming need to deploy specialized caches for some of these protocols deep in operators’ networks . As a result, there is a need to arrive at a set of interoperable interfaces making hosting these caches. The new Edge working group will address these issues and produce a reference architecture and a set of documents covering control-plane aspects of a cache hosting environment, such as provisioning, scaling, and service discovery.
