Why Did Brightcove Join the Streaming Video Technology Alliance?

Brightcove has been a member of the OATC committee since 2015 and continuing as a contributing member of the SVTA Alliance since 2020.

Brightcove is a pioneer in streaming technology. Over the years, the organization has pushed the boundaries and delivered innovative technologies to move the streaming industry forward. For example, Zencoder was the first massively parallel cloud-based transcoding solution, and Context Aware Encoding was the first technology of its kind. Both of these technologies were recognized with Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards. Brightcove is committed to delivering innovative technology and solutions to ensure video service providers can deliver high-quality videos, engage audiences, monetize their content, and sell products and solutions at scale through a secure and reliable platform.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the SVTA Can Help Address?

There are several trends happening in the market today. They include explosive growth in video consumption, increasingly fragmented content delivery (due to new codecs, streaming formats, SDR/HDR variants, DRMs, etc.), and increasing popularity of live and low-latency live streaming. There is also an increasing realization that traditional Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) aren’t equipped or designed to handle all these different use cases effectively.

In this context, we actively follow and participate in several activities driven by SVTA. Specifically, we believe that SVTA’s Open Caching activity has significant potential, as well as efforts towards promotion and uses of Quality-related tags in video delivery systems (so-called CMCD and CMSD metadata). We believe that these activities can shape the evolution of delivery systems towards more flexible, future-proof, and more efficient architectures.

How Does an Organization Like the SVTA Bring Value to the Industry?

Having an organization like the Streaming Video Technology Alliance brings a lot of value to the industry. It’s critical in establishing best practices and building and deploying open standards for the streaming industry. All of this work helps to move the industry forward.
