Why Did Edgio Originally Join the Streaming Video Technology Alliance?

Edgio, a global leader in streaming media technology, quickly understood the complicated and complex world of streaming. Originally Limelight Networks joined the SVTA in 2014 as a founding member, believing in the mission of delivering live and on-demand video and online content to any connected device worldwide. Limelight, now part of Edgio, saw the SVTA as a way to collaborate with top companies and experts in solving complex online streaming challenges in a way that would provide the most benefit for the consumer, therefore allowing all of us to succeed. Being part of the SVTA allowed us access to working groups to identify and create industry solutions, ensuring Edgio directly shaped best practices, including work on the Open Caching standards.

Over The Past 10 Years, How Has The SVTA Consistently Met The Needs of The Streaming Video Industry?

Over the past 10 years, the SVTA has been vital in advancing the streaming industry by addressing key challenges, promoting best practices, and fostering collaboration among industry stakeholders. It is a tight-knit community of knowledgeable people from many ISPs and CDNs, and the SVTA plays a pivotal role in helping the industry move forward together. The SVTA provides a much-needed “common technology discussion forum” for the industry.

What Do You Feel Are The Major Challenges Still To Be Tackled In The Streaming Industry And How Do You Feel The SVTA Can Help In The Years To Come?

At Edgio, we’re always looking ahead to the future. Some major challenges we are addressing include establishing standards and guidelines for streaming technologies. For example, we are actively discussing ways to reduce streaming latency and balance stream quality with costs. As streaming technology evolves, we aim to identify potential cost savings while maintaining high quality and navigating these changes with our clients effectively. We are diligently working on scalability and reliability, exploring topics such as ATSC 3.0 broadcasting and Uplynk’s CDN Streaming Offload around multi-cast distribution technology.

Additionally, we are developing a mid-stream seamless multi-CDN switching based on player analytics. These technical challenges cannot be solved in a silo. The SVTA helps push the boundaries and provides initiatives such as developing standards for video compression, streaming protocols, content protection, and other aspects of the streaming video ecosystem. By establishing common standards and practices, the SVTA fosters innovation and improves consumers’ and industry professionals’ overall streaming video experience.

What Has Been Your Most Memorable/Rewarding Experience As An SVTA Member?

It has to be the relationships we’ve formed. In the fall of 2023, I connected on a podcast with JT (Jason Thibeault). It was a great conversation about low latency. JT and I have known each other for over a decade. It’s thanks to the SVTA that these relationships exist. We’ve found that partnerships and relationships lead to success in the industry. We strive to help each other as much as possible.

What Advice Would You Give Someone Considering Joining The SVTA?

There are almost too many to list, foremost taking advantage of networking opportunities to connect with industry peers, experts, and potential collaborators. Building relationships within the alliance can lead to valuable partnerships and insights. Engage actively—participates in working groups, forums, and events. Proactive engagement will enhance your knowledge and insights to better serve your companies. Finally, look for opportunities to collaborate with other members on projects or initiatives that align with your interests and expertise. These efforts often lead to innovative solutions and advancements in the streaming industry.
