As streaming grew in 2020, as consumers watched so much original content, so many reruns of 80s sitcoms, so many movies, there was still one thing lacking – live sports – because the pandemic brought leagues around the world to a halt. From football to soccer to basketball, the safety of players was of more concern than the lost revenue. And as leagues returned, they all shared one thing in common…no fans. The only way to consume live sports was through streaming which created heightened expectations. Lower latency. Better quality. Even new experiences. In this webinar, we’ll talk about how live sports streaming evolved from the pandemic and what we might expect in the future.   This webinar will be moderated by Jason Thibeault, Executive Director of the Streaming Video Alliance.

Topics Covered

Topics covered during this webinar included:
  1. The pandemic put a halt on live sports. What were streaming operators doing during the lull? Did VOD traffic, for past sporting events, increase?
  2. Live sports are, of course, back-on. Has anything changed in the streaming experience or is it just “business as usual?” What’s new? What’s different? What’s the same?
  3. What is the data showing about sports streaming now? What does it tell us about not only the current state of things, but the future as well?
  4. What are some of the technologies streaming sports operators are exploring or implementing to provide a better viewer experience? How are they improving scale, resiliency, latency, quality, and consistency?
  5. How did the pandemic impact stream security? When everything came back online, did the pirates have new ways to steal content?
  6. Before the pandemic, there was a lot of talk about AR/XR streaming sports experiences. Has that changed?
  7. Are there any new challenges live streaming sports operators have to deal with right now, both as a result of the pandemic and these new experiences?
  8. What does the future streaming sports experience look like? What technologies might be employed to make it happen?
  9. If you could give a streaming sports operator one piece of advice post-pandemic, what would it be?
