Piracy is a critical concern for both content owners and OTT providers. In many cases, a multi-faceted security architecture is required as part of content licensing. But which mechanisms work best and under what circumstances? From forensic watermarking to DRM to HTTPs, this panel will explore the various methods for securing streaming video and some best practices for deploying different security mechanisms.

Topics Covered

  1. What is the state of streaming video piracy today? How much is being stolen? Is it a lot? A little?
  2. When DRM first came out, there was a lot of consumer backlash? Are people more comfortable with DRM today? Why or why not?
  3. What are some considerations when implementing DRM? What do content owners and distributors have to keep in mind when selecting this technology?
  4. Does DRM work for live streaming content? What are the pros and cons?
  5. What kind of assurances does HTTPS provide in securing online video? Is this a technology that content distributors should deploy regardless of other kinds of video protection methods they are using?
  6. How does watermarking play into an online video security strategy? Is it a deterrent? Can it prevent stream theft? How is it enforced?
  7. Is there a conflict between adding more security mechanisms to protect streaming content and latency? If yes, how can it be fixed?
  8. Besides DRM and watermarking, what are some other methods that content owners and distributors can (and should) use to protect their content against theft? At the server? At the player?
  9. Are there any ways network operators can help combat stream piracy (i.e., Kodi boxes)?
  10. How does mobile viewership complicate efforts by content owners and distributors to protect their content?
  11. Are there any security technologies that might be coming into play over the next couple of years which would radically change the current environment?
