Why Did Axinom Join the Streaming Video Technology Alliance?

Axinom has collaborated with some of the biggest industry players to build secure and efficient content backends in the last two decades. This extensive experience has led us to recognize the importance of standardization and openness in the streaming industry. Hence, we joined the Streaming Video Technology Alliance (SVTA) to work alongside other industry leaders and experts in addressing the challenges of delivering high-quality, secure streaming experiences worldwide and seeing these solutions implemented across the industry.

By participating in the SVTA, we aim to contribute our expertise in content management, digital rights management, and secure content delivery. Our past contributions to organizations like the DASH Industry Forum (DASH-IF), standards like CPIX (Content Protection Information Exchange Format), and the development of tools and libraries to help with content security implementation/debugging underscore our commitment to industry collaboration.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the SVTA Can Help Address?

The biggest technical challenge is managing the complexity caused by rapid growth and market fragmentation. Today, more than 90% of all internet traffic is video, and scaling the infrastructure to handle this increased demand for bandwidth and processing power while ensuring interoperability across diverse standards and securing content against threats are critical issues. Furthermore, the technical complexity has also grown multi-fold, with users demanding a 4K, low-latency experience.

As more providers and platforms enter the streaming market, the need for interoperability becomes increasingly critical. While standards like MPEG-DASH and common encryption provide a foundation, gaps remain in ad insertion and metadata management. Simultaneously, the rise in high-value content has increased the threats of piracy. Even smaller providers require accessible yet robust security solutions to protect their assets effectively.

Additionally, using AI for efficiency and protection while managing intellectual property concerns is still a work in progress. I believe the SVTA can play a vital role in solving these challenges while setting open standards and promoting best practices to promote sustainable growth.

How Does an Organization Like the SVTA Bring Value to the Industry?

The SVTA brings immense value by serving as a collaborative hub for stakeholders across the ecosystem. By fostering open dialogue and cooperation among content providers, technology vendors, service operators, and other industry participants, the SVTA creates an environment where collective challenges can be tackled. At Axinom, we experienced this firsthand during our first quarterly meeting in Antwerp earlier this year (2024).

The Alliance’s work in developing open standards, guidelines, and best practices helps drive innovation and ensures that the industry moves forward cohesively. We firmly believe that topics like content security are best implemented when the industry works jointly, and the SVTA provides an ideal platform for this collaboration.
