Why Did Cisco Join the Streaming Video Technology Alliance?

Cisco has been a founding member of the Alliance since 2014. As a market-leading partner, vendor, and innovator of infrastructure solutions to Communication Service Providers (CSPs), one of our goals is to help the industry recognize their value within the streaming ecosystem. In 2020, we formed a partnership with Qwilt, and together we launched a global content delivery network (CDN) solution that leverages the CSP edge to address the increasing volumes of streaming content over the internet and delivers them without overwhelming the network. We believe CSPs’ footprint of the end-to-end infrastructure, combined with their differentiated experience and expertise in traffic engineering/management, makes their role unique and pivotal to ensuring high-quality streaming on a global scale. The resources and insights the Alliance offers are crucial to fostering collaborative initiatives around open standards, a key to successful implementation of next-gen content delivery platforms such as the joint Cisco/Qwilt solution.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the SVTA Can Help Address?

There are several trends happening in the market today. They include explosive growth in video consumption, increasingly fragmented content delivery (amidst subscriber preference for broad choices of streaming content), and the ever-growing popularity of live streaming. And there’s also significant interest and investments in the Metaverse, which should impact many industry verticals. The Metaverse calls for volumetric applications that are both latency-sensitive and bandwidth-intensive. Traditional Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) aren’t equipped or designed to effectively handle them. We need to enable the shift to a more modern, future-ready content delivery solution, and one that’s built to address the specific challenges around scale, performance, and cost-efficiency.

How Does an Organization Like the SVTA Bring Value to the Industry?

The establishment of best practices and driving the ratification of open standards for streaming are critical to achieving ecosystem harmony. We seek to tap into the unique resources and insights of the Alliance, as open standards lead to successful collaboration within the ecosystem. The Alliance offers tremendous value through its vendor-agnostic approach. It provides the venue for industry players to gather, educate, discuss, and collaborate towards a common goal of delivering outstanding streaming content experience to every subscriber. We believe that joining the Alliance is mutually beneficial for advancing the industry and we’re excited to continue working with the Alliance and all its members.
