Why Did Telefónica Join the Streaming Video Technology Alliance?

Operators’ CDNs are called to play a central role in the future of video streaming services. The success of these services and the ever-growing video quality requirements (full HD, 4K, 8K) have been generating exponential growth of streaming traffic over the internet, which according to all forecasts will continue in the coming years.

In this scenario, operators’ CDNs will become a key element to guarantee the feasibility and the sustainability of the whole ecosystem, providing the best QoE to end users without overwhelming the network. However, for this to happen, operator CDNs need open standards and best practices to allow that any CDN is able deliver the content of any video service. In 2019, Telefónica joined the SVTA to support its Open Caching initiative and to actively contribute to turning it into the open and interoperable standard needed for achieving the operators’ CDN vision.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the SVTA Can Help Address?

Unlike other types of networks and services, the video streaming industry standardization has always lagged behind the services themselves. In this way, many different ecosystems have been created within different solution providers, or even, as in our case, directly by operators or content owners. No matter how open our interfaces try to be, specific solution creation results in the proliferation of proprietary systems, penalizing interoperability.

Moving pieces to the cloud, having full flexibility to integrate home-grown or industry modules, multivendor strategies, and of course CDN interconnection, all require standardization in order to provide the video streaming ecosystem with enough flexibility to be managed in an efficient way. Most details in video compression, packetization, and all technicalities that belong to the video streaming, might be addressed by specific standardization fora, but putting all pieces together requires a more comprehensive approach where SVTA is taking the lead.

How Does an Organization Like the SVTA Bring Value to the Industry?

The creation of these standards and best practices requires a broad industry consensus to ensure their usefulness and adoption. Organizations such as the SVTA are the perfect place to achieve this consensus, allowing the participation and involvement of all stakeholders.

The SVTA has the great opportunity, and also the great challenge, to evolve the current ecosystem, establishing best practices and open standards with enough consensus in the industry, allowing a reordering to make it more sustainable and efficient, or in other words, to ensure its future feasibility.
