Viasat is a global communications company that provides satellite and wireless broadband connectivity to some of the hardest to reach locations in the world—from a home or business in an unserved or underserved community, or a passenger, pilot or crew member flying at 35,000 feet, to a traveler sailing in sea vessel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We are always looking for ways to give our customers a better online and streaming video engagement experience. We joined the Streaming Video Alliance because we knew we could work with like-minded companies in a collaborative effort to give end-users great streaming video viewing experiences at the lowest possible cost. The Alliance provides an ecosystem and specifications for interoperability to help accelerate the adoption of new streaming video approaches—which as an operator, we are consistently seeking out. And finally, there is always interest to bring innovation deeper into our organization, as we look to solve new transmission challenges that arise as more streaming video bits take up more traffic on our network. The Alliance is looking at new methodologies and technologies to tackle next-gen streaming services—from open caching to multicast adaptive bitrate video delivery—which we believe will enable us to deliver even better end-user experiences in the future.
If you look at most of the Alliance’s working groups today, they are directly or indirectly addressing scale and quality of experience (QoE) issues because as online video demand increases around the globe, ISPs will need to find better ways to lessen the burden on their networks. For example, we’re very engaged on understanding opportunities around in-network, open caching as a way to solve the traffic problem that arises as significant increases in online video congest the network. By establishing critical underlying requirements for an advanced open caching system, we can ensure operators deliver at scale, improve QoE and lower latency—yielding an overall enhanced end-user experience.
The Alliance is invaluable in bringing together players from all parts of the online, video and streaming media ecosystem – content providers, content delivery networks, internet service providers and equipment and software vendors. By bringing these groups together, we can help define a roadmap and vision for how, as an ecosystem, we can improve the end-user experience through a specification and proof-of-concept approach.
